John Kuhn Doin' Work

I like John Kuhn.  I like John Kuhn a whole heap!  He's a guy that can will himself into the endzone.  As much as I hate seeing Ryan Grant on IR again, I feel much more confident this time around with Brandon Jackson coming into his own and this guy, number thirty, John Kuhn.  I mean, just take a look at this touchdown run from week one of the preseason and tell me that's not hard-nosed football.  It's a huge bummer to lose Grant, but I think there's a silver lining this season when we see John Kuhn's coming out party.

Back 2 School

The first few days of school always set-up the rest of the year for me, especially in grade school.  I always wanted to coolest stuff, from markers and folders to lunch boxes and backpacks.  I think I even appreciate a sweet Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lunch box more than I did back then!

Proof Canada Rules

That's Snakes & Lattes, a cafĂ© in Toronto that doesn't have free wi-fi.  In fact, it doesn't even want you to bring in your laptop or your smart phone.  But in a world in which we're all digitally tethered, why on Earth would they go that route?  Two words:  Board games.

I stumbled upon this article by The Torontoist and it's a genius idea.  In fact, they have over 1,500 board games to pick from!  And we're not just talking about Monopoly here folks, we're talking Axis and Allies, Carcasonne and everything in between!  I've recently developed an interest in board and card games of different varieties and I wouldn't be able to contain my excitement if such a place came to the South Valley.  So for now, I'll just dream of that day.

Thanks Bus Crew!

Well, we all survived and it was quite a hoot!  I had the pleasure of hanging out with a fantastic group of listeners while at the Packers game last night.  We couldn't have asked for a better game.  I mean, when the Packers obliterate the Colts 59 to 24, it's always a good night.  We also couldn't have had any better weather or more incredible company.

Thanks again to all of you that came to the game and I hope to see you all back when we go to the regular season game this year.  If you didn't get a chance to go, I definitely encourage you to make it to the game this fall!

You Have Died of Dysentery

Some of the best days while I was attending Jefferson Elementary School in Oshkosh growing up, were when we got to go in the computer lab and play some Oregon Trail.  There was so much fun to be had and yet most of the time my friends and I would fail.  Whether it's drowning while forging the river or contracting dysentery, it seemed that getting to Oregon was near impossible.  This video really takes on the key issues and fun that I remember from my childhood and gives it a remarkably well done trailer for a fake movie.

Will He Cry Again?

So what's the over-under of Favre changing his mind again?  In case you've been living under a rock, Brett Favre has told Minnesota Vikings officials that he will not be returning as their quarterback for the 2010 season.  We've seen this before, and with it being the third time I'm now convinced that Brett simply wanted the NFL record for number of times returning from retirement.

Looking at his track record, you can never count him out of coming back yet again, and until week 17 wraps up, I won't be surprised if he does.  However, if it holds up, then my prediction of my predictions is correct, in that one is already wrong.  I think that makes sense...

NFC North Predictions

The Packers officially begin training camp today at St. Norbert's College in Green Bay and I couldn't be more excited for the upcoming season.  The NFC North is looking to be a great division filled with drama (that's you, Mr. Favre), up and coming players and a wide-open race to first place.  Here are a few predictions that I have for the NFC North this season:

- At least one of the Wild Card teams for the NFC will come out of the North.

- The Chicago Bears will surprise a lot of people, especially on the defensive side of the ball, to pick up the slack that Jay Cutler leaves on the field.

- Brett Favre will (obviously) return, he'll play well, but not as well as last season.

- The Lions will start getting it together, but not enough as they'll finish with six or seven wins.

- The Green Bay Packers will show that team unity can overcome any lack of talent and they'll have a solid season of 11-4.

- Ryan Grant will finally live up to the expectations by Packers fans and will be a top five back this year.

At the end of the season, I'll hopefully remember to come back to these and see how well I did.  I love football and I like to think that I know a few things about it, but I'm also completely horrible at predictions.  It should be fun finding out either way, though!

Favorite Fair Food

I would have to say that my favorite fair food would be the amazing real Wisconsin cheddar cheese curds.  I have no idea who makes them, but I know that I've only seen them at Country USA.  It's as if a lump of cheese was directly dropped into the deep fryer.  What comes out is a cheese curd that absolutely destroys anything you'd find at a restaurant or the frozen food aisle.  I have (embarrassingly) yet to try chocolate covered bacon, and now I'm intrigued by these chocolate covered Twinkies.  Those Peanut Butter ones would make me a happy Joey.

LeVar Burton, Storyteller

You most likely know LeVar Burton from one of three roles:  Kunta Kinte on Roots, Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation and the host and producer of PBS' Reading Rainbow.  Beyond those roles, however, LeVar Burton says he is simply a storyteller.  He's directed, written, narrated, produced, acted and much more; all with resounding critical acclaim and success.

I had the pleasure of speaking with LeVar today on our sister station, K107.1.  We spoke on a variety of topics, most notably his newest feature, "The Jensen Project" which airs on NBC tonight at 7:00pm.  Based on his breadth of work, I have no doubt that this too will be awesome and fun for the whole family.

It's not too often that I feel star struck, but to be perfectly honest, heading into the interview I was a little nervous.  However, as soon as we got started, LeVar was so gracious and cordial that it felt like I was talking to a normal guy.  He wasn't "Grammy and Emmy Award winning LeVar Burton," he was just "LeVar" and made the entire interview a joy.  So thanks LeVar for such an awesome interview!

In case you didn't check out the interview on The Second Shift, you can check it out right here whenever you want!

You Do NOT Talk About Ferris Club!

I shouldn't even post this video, for fear of what Ferris will do to me...  But it's a spin on one of my favorite movies that makes it thematically like another of my favorite movies.  Well worth the risk.

Brett vs. Lebron

Keep in mind that this is satire, so it's not real, but check out this funny read from Bleacher Report about a hypothetical Brett Favre and his disdain for Lebron James dragging out his decision.  Granted, it's a bit dated since James announced his decision to go to Miami last night, but still enjoyable.

Too Rich For My Blood

My enjoyment that comes from playing video games is more than the average Joe, but I don't know that I could push it as far as this guy.  In South Korea, the game Starcraft is similar to the NFL here in the states.  There are three television stations that are dedicated to Starcraft content and competitions and the professional players are sponsored.  Check out the info here.

What this guy is demonstrating is what's called APM, or Actions Per Minute.  He's so fast, that he can perform 300 actions per minute.  At that point, it becomes less about fun, and more about work.  I can't even imagine the number of hours, days, weeks, months and even years of constant play it has taken for him to be that good.  I'm a pretty "hardcore" gamer and I'm having trouble even following what's happening on his screen.  Insane.

Go Cheap-o!

I've mentioned to many different people that you should never pay the premium price for a Monster branded HDMI cable because you're not improving your signal significantly enough.  Now, thanks to Lifehacker, I can prove it.  Take a look at this infographic to find out why a $10 or less cable is a much better purchase.

Morning McFly!

Dear Youthful Joe,

Thank you for taking the time out of our day to read this note from 2010.  I know it's really fun to go to a bunch of concerts, play loads of video games and see the latest and greatest movies with your friends.  I write you this letter in hopes to curb your irresponsible spending and implore you to listen to your parents.  You see, I could really use all that money you're wasting.  Please continue to have fun, as the memories are priceless.  However, some also come with a hefty price-tag.  Cheap fun is still good fun.

Regards,

Joe Truesdale (Future You)

PS - Don't attach a dog leash to your friend's bike and ride your roller blades behind it.  It doesn't end well for us.

Here Comes the Green Hornet

This is the new trailer for The Green Hornet that's coming out in January.  When I first heard that Seth Rogan was going to play the title role, I'll admit that I groaned a little bit.  But after seeing this, I'm starting to warm up to the possibilities.  The trailer has some neat style, and I'm certainly glad that Cameron Diaz wasn't more prominent.  I guess come January, we'll find out if the movie has any sting.  Ha!  See what I did there?  With the whole sting thing?  Like hornet?  Moving on...

iOS 4 is Finally Here!

As an iPhone 3GS user, I've been looking forward to the new update to the operating system (now named iOS) for awhile now and I'm happy to say that it released earlier today!  A lof the changes in functionality are subtle, but the two big ones that I (and countless others) have been clamoring for are mutlitasking and folders.

The multitasking allows users to have multiple apps running at the same time, whereas before only one app at a time could be open and running.  The folers allows a more streamlined experience in which apps of like functionality can be grouped together to remove clutter.

Unfortunately the launch happened after getting to the studio, so my impressions will have to come on another day, but what are your thoughts?  Do you own an iPhone or iPod, and if so, are you as excited about the update as I am?  Does this update finally push you over the edge to go out and purchase one?  Let me know!

Is It "Sundae" Yet?

So I finally had the Double Down this week at KFC and I have to say, I was a little disappointed. I was hoping to find a stunt food item that would be so over-the-top, that I'd have instant regret for eating it. Definitely not the case, since after I was finished I could have eaten another one (although, then I'd probably regret it).  I'd totally recommend it though, because it was pretty tasty and not that awful for your health.

The video above though?  That's pretty regretable.  The Cold Stone Creamery "Everything Under the Sun-dae" looks magnificent, but you'd need an army battalion to help you finish it.

Where Was This When I Needed It?

This is apparently a totally legit item. You can buy it right now at BuyBetterMarriageBlanket.com! Too bad I didn't find this before Wade Bates got married. Maybe a good anniversary gift though!

To the Thicket of Solitude!

He's the superhero that puts on his underwear over his pants!  Quailman is, of course, the alter-ego of Doug Funnie, star of "Doug," one of the original NickToons on Nickelodeon.  It was definitely my favorite of the bunch, though they were all great (Rocko's Modern Life, Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, etc.).  This is one of the many minimalist superhero posters that ScreenRant has put together in honor of Iron Man 2 coming out in just over a week!

Record Store Day!

It's finally here!  Record Store Day is an awesome event that happens at independent record stores across the country.  All the stores get some exclusive and rare items that will only be available on that day (Saturday, April 17th).  CDs, vinyl, DVDs and so much more.  Many of the stores turn the day into one big party with live music, food and sales.

The releases I'm most looking forward to include Manchester Orchestra "Live @ Park Avenue," fun. "Live @ Fingerprints," and a Coheed and Cambria 7" picture disc.  Some other artists with a more broad appeal that will have items on-hand include Owl City, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Rolling Stones and more.  There will also be many different promotional items, like label samplers and hand bags.  Get the full list here.

There's a few stores in our area that will be participating and they include The Exclusive Company in Oshkosh and Appleton (and all of them across the state for that matter) and Mad Hatteur in Fond du Lac.  Make sure you stop in and support your indy record stores!

I Must Double Down!

A sandwich that deserves to be served at the Wisconsin State Fair has finally arrived at KFC this week and I must say; as disgusting as it looks and as terrible as it would be for my health, I must eat one!  In case you're not aware, the Double Down is the latest "stunt food" to come out of KFC in which two pieces of fried chicken replace a bun.  They're adhered together via a melted layer of cheese, bacon and sauce.  I know for a fact that it would not look nearly as appetizing as the promotional photo above, but I'm so curious about all that fat and salt crammed into one menu item.  Anyone else looking forward to eating one and then regretting it for the rest of your life?

Timon and Pumba as Humans?

Pretty great artist rendition, if you ask me.  Fernando Mendoca on Deviant Art is to credit for this awesome piece.  Not nearly as weird as I initially thought it would be.

(Ctrl + C) + (Ctrl + V) = Disney Imagineers

I found this video on 'nerd blog' TwentySided. I'm a pretty big fan of Disney movies since I watched an almost unhealthy amount growing up, and I never once noticed these similarities.

Please Come to the States... Please!

As both a practicing video game junkie and a recovering soda junkie, I believe I would go nuts over these Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker Mountain Dew cans.  Currently their only in Japan, but hopefully they'll get a debut here in the U.S.

And So, It Begins...

March Madness has official hit the United States as the first rounds of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament began today.  I may not be the authority on basketball at KFIZ, nor does it top football as my favorite sport, but I really enjoy watching the tournament along with everyone else.  Every single team seems to really give it their all, and the greatest thing is that their not playing for a pay check, or a ring, or a bonus (although, one could argue that they're playing for their future NBA salary).  They're playing (mostly) for pride.  This seems especially evident with the lower seeded teams, who's only chance to be in the spotlight is by giving the country one of those huge upsets we all love to see.

So far, there's been some great games, and this first weekend is my favorite of the tournament.  Sure, the Final Four and championship games are exciting, but when it's moving from one game to the next at a blistering pace and everyone has a chance to move on, it really can't be topped.  On top of that, my bracket is being torn apart here early on, but that's nothing new, so I'm cool with it.  How are yours doing?

Get Your Brackets Together

Here's your Web Waster of the Day:

SocialTimes - The shift has already been made, it's no longer a "new thing" to be involved in social media, but it seems to be something that a fair number of people still don't have their heads wrapped around yet.  This is a great site that delves into some of the more significant reasons for its rise and why it is not going anywhere anytime soon.
