Second Time for Election Coverage

Well, it's about 15 hours after I left the City and County Government Center and I've had a chance to collect my thoughts. It was an interesting night for sure. If you tuned into our coverage earlier in the year for the Wisconsin primaries, you would have heard myself and Wade Bates covering that day and it was a huge change this time around.

For those who haven't been to the City and County Government Center on an election night before, there is a laptop connected to a projector that has all of the results displayed on it. They put up about 4 or 5 races on the screen at one time and then after about 10 seconds the next six races will pop up. If there are only a few races (like the primaries earlier in the year) then it's not too tough to keep track of everything. However, with last night having 24 races occuring, trying to keep all the numbers straight and up to date can be a little daunting.

I have to thank Sue Strands and Joyce Beuchel for all of their help last night. I'm sure I looked a little like a deer caught in headlights last night and they pointed me in the right direction.

Even though I was there for a little over two and a half hours, the time flied by and I actually had a good time out there. It was fun to see how the votes change or stay the same as the night goes on.

The night also gave me even more respect for my co-workers Bob Nelson and Wade Bates. Bob was only on his second full day back after his surgery, and he was going all out bring the best election coverage onto KFIZ. And after last night, he still was ready to go at 6am this morning. That's die-hard dedication to providing the best content possible. Wade Bates also put in a full day, worked all night and still had sports together this morning. Sure I had to be collecting results until about 11pm, but it was more like a normal day for me since I'm on the later shift anyway. It's great to have people working here with that level of motivation and work ethic.

So all-in-all, I think my second election night at KFIZ went well and I'm looking forward to getting my hands dirty come November!

Way Too Long Part Deux -OR- How I Killed My Blogging Career

Jeez I am just plain old bad at getting this updates on a regular schedule. Comparatively Wade Bates and Huffy are destroying me. I HAVE to get on this regularly. I hope that this (my third or fourth attempt) is the post that does the deed.

And with this post, I will be alerting you of a gripe. What grinds my gears, if you will. I am a younger gentleman, in case you didn't know, in my lower twenties, and I have been paying utility bills for the first time in my life. I understood that these bills fluctuate going into this stage in my life and I also knew that there was an option to jump onto budget billing. Never did I expect them to fluctuate as much as they have. With that, we will move into a tale of cold nights and outrageous estimates.

When I moved into my apartment at the end of July last year, I called up my utilities company to assign the gas and electric to my name and to create a new account. This utilities company shall remain nameless, but lets say that they wanted me to join an ALLIANCE with them. During this process I decided to find out what the budget billing would be and found that it would be out of my price range, something like $120 a month or along those lines. So I decided to take my chances with month to month. It started out fantastic. I was paying $56-$59 a month for gas and electric. I was able to turn on the air conditioning and live rather comfortably without any crazy increase in my bill. When it got to be chilly, I wasn't sure what my bill was going to be, I assumed more, but I wasn't sure how much more. So in order to conserve energy, I kept my thermostat at an even 60 degrees. Many people would say that this was too cold, and that their thermostat was at least up to 68. I figured this would help me to stay under $100 when my bill came for that month. An understandable assumption you might say. This was not the case...

I came into the studio one chilly December day and checked my email, as it is the first thing I do when I get in, and noticed an email from my utility company informing me that my utility bill was available for me to pay and that it was... brace yourself... $189. Now, let's pause for a minute and think about how much of an increase this really is. $189 is more than TRIPLE $56-$59. I had my thermostat set to 60 degrees... in an apartment... on the second story! Heat rises doesn't it? In comparison, I spoke with many home owners and the prices that they quoted me that they pay ranged between $170 and $200... for an entire HOUSE! And I'm just heating a two bedroom apartment that, while comfortable for a single man, is FAR from huge. I called my utility company thinking surely there must be some mistake. The costumer service rep told me that it was indeed correct and that perhaps I should plastic the windows and better insulate. I agreed and began a new approach.

So I put plastic around my windows, closed myself off to live ONLY in the living room so that I wasn't heating any other rooms. I turned off my gas heat COMPLETELY and began heating only that one room with an electric space heater. I thought that surely this would help my bill be reduced. So, after a month of living in a very cold apartment with no sunlight (the window shades had to be behind the window plastic, and therefore could not be opened) I received my next bill. It was... get this... two dollars less. Yes, $187. You might be thinking, "Well, Joe, they estimate their rates every once and awhile when they can't actually read your meter." You would be right, that was indeed an estimate and was based on my last month of energy consumption as well as last year's monthly rate. However, in this guess (and I do say "guess" since "estimate" is an "educated guess," and there obviously wasn't any education behind this guess,) they said that I had used 0 units of electricity. ZERO. Did I somehow turn Amish during the month of January? I can only imagine how this "guess" would come to be. I will now give my "estimate" of how this billed amount came to fruition in the form of a play script.

Joe's Energy Bill Guess Short Play

(The room is brightly lit with cubicles as far as the eye can see. Center stage we see one cubicle opened up to the audience with a new employee, Jan, training with long time AK Energy employee Mike.)

MIKE: (using those cheesy hand quote gestures) So Jan, sometimes we don't actually read these so-called "meters" at our clients' buildings. We do "estimates" when we "don't have the time" to get there.

JAN: How do we go about arriving at those estimates?

MIKE: Well, it's easier to see an example rather than hypothesize. So let's pull someone's file... How about this Joe Truesdale gentleman? (Mike reaches for a file and opens it on Jan's desk.) What do you notice first?

JAN: Well, his last month was a lot more. He must have used a lot of gas heating his place of residence. But, he does have an apartment... wouldn't it cost less to heat that?

MIKE: Common misconception. It costs just as much, if not MORE to heat smaller spaces than it does larger ones.

JAN: Interesting.

MIKE: Isn't it? It's knowledge that translates to power. Now, we will make an estimate on Mr. Truesdale's bill. How about... $187.

JAN: Okay, so that would mean we would put about $40 into his electric and the rest into his gas right?

MIKE: Again, you might think that, but you are totally wrong. See, in an effort to save himself some money, he probably turned off all of his lights, didn't watch any TV, never checked anything on his computer, unplugged his refrigerator, never charged his cell phone, didn't have any alarm clocks plugged in, and refused to cook anything whether in the microwave or on the stove. And in doing that, he thought that he could then have his heat at a nice roasty, toasty 60 degrees.

JAN: 60 degrees is toasty? Wow. I feel like I'm learning so much.

MIKE: You don't know that half of it! Next we'll get into how to blow off costumer complaints!

(Lights fade to black as the audience nods their heads and thinks, "Huh, that makes sense now.")

THE END

Or something like that at least... So obviously I called, they said that when they make their "guesses" they will adjust on the next bill in order to compensate one way or the other. Why is this? Do they think, "Well, we have more in debt payments this month, so let's 'guess' some more on these poor chumps so we can make our ends meet, and next month we're fine"?

So I waited for them to actually read my meter, and on February 20th I receive my latest energy bill for... drumroll please... $11.97. Wow. Well, I was obviously happy about that, but still have to wonder... will this next bill be another $12 one on an estimate and then I'll get obliterated when they compensate for $200 the following cycle? Will they try to make up for the $12 by charging me $200 right away? Or will everything just go back to the normal $56-$59 bills? Somehow I doubt the latter... Hopefully the next time I discuss my energy bill it will be in a more positive light. Somehow I doubt that too.

Cheeseburger... in a can?!

I just stumbled across this and find it absolutely fascinating. It's quite possibly the best thing to happen to the cheeseburger since a fried egg (try it if you haven't, soooo delicious). But, it could also be an abomination to the delicious sandwhich we all know and love. I wonder if these will ever get released in the states... If so, you can bet that I'll pick some up and report back with a review! Check out the Burger in a Can for yourself!

New Website!

I know I haven't posted in awhile and there's no excuse for that what-so-ever. I am ashamed to be in last place for the blogging scene on KFIZ.com and I will do everything I can to get to the top! Well... at least for the next week... or so.

But today there's a great reason to be blogging. The brand new KFIZ.com! It's beautiful. So much better than what was up before. You can actually navigate the site with ease and it's much more visually appealing than the old one was. I can't say enough about what Christopher Gustavus has done for the website. When listening to The Morning Show with Bob Hoffmaster tomorrow at 10:35, call in and tell Christopher what a great job he did getting this new site up and running.

The part I am most excited about is the added podcasting features. For those of you who don't know, I usually stroll into the studio about Noon, which means I wake up between 10 and 11am (sometimes later...) so I miss a lot of great stuff from the morning programming on KFIZ that I am excited to be able to keep up to date on now. The menu system on the site is also much cleaner and easy to access.

So all in all, my hat is off to Mr. Gustavus and you should mull around KFIZ.com quite a bit in the coming weeks, it's a great start but more is on the way!

Weekend Warriors

After a two week hiatus, Green Bay finally has another game tomorrow. I must say, I was starting to get the shakes from withdrawal, but now it's the shakes of anticipation.

I love the Green Bay Packers. I grew up watching Reggie White, Sterling Sharpe, Brett Favre, Robert Brooks, Dorsey Levens, and all of the Green and Gold throughout the 90s and I continue to watch to this day. I'm definitely a spoiled Packers fan for sure. The worst season I had to watch was two years ago in 2005 when they ended the season 4-12. Luckily that's the only losing season I've seen since I was six!

When I started to get into football, the Packers were just coming out of a rough slide (as we all know) though about 23 years. Did you know that from 1968 to 1991 the Pack only had five winning seasons? Whew, that's a tough stat to swallow. And how can we all forget the Tony Mandarich draft selection? Luckily for me I was only six years old in 1991 and my dad was just getting me into watching the historic Green Bay Packers.

At the time, I had no real idea what was going on since I was only six. I knew that they were playing well if my dad was yelling, "Go! Go! Go!" and playing poorly if he was pounding his fist on the arm of his recliner. At that time, most often it was the latter. Then came 1992... We saw Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren, and Brett Favre join the historic franchise. The 1990's version of the Three Amigos.

I was beginning to understand the rules of the game shortly there-after. I was picking up a few rules here and there and soon I was the second string arm-chair quarterback to my dad. When mom would ask a question about a rule or call, if dad had his mouth full of some chips, I would jump in and give the right answer with pride. Football was my past-time and I didn't look back. I've seen each one of Brett's consecutive starts from beginning to end and I'm proud to say that I've seen the Packers win a Super Bowl.

Fast-forward to today and we are getting set to watch what could be a return to that level of infamy (knock on wood). The Packers have a tough match-up on their hands with the Seattle Seahawks. I'm sure Matt Hasselbeck is sick of the clip from 2003's playoff game between the two teams with his infamous "We want the ball and we're gonna score!" We all remember how that one turned out...

But none-the-less, Hasselbeck will definitely want to put that behind him.

If the Packers can get a win, then one has to wonder... Can the Pack make it to the big dance? All I can say is that I hope so. The night I watched the Packers in Super Bowl XXI was an incredible night. I was 11 years old and I had absolutely no doubt in my mind that the Three Amigos would bring the Lombardi trophy back to Title Town. This time around, I have my doubts... But I wonder... Would those doubts make the victory that much sweeter? Time will tell, and hopefully it will tell sooner rather than later.

Way Too Long

Before I start this entry, let me apologize. I know that all three of you who read my humble little blog were distraught over the lack of an entry for quite some time. I feel awful for the delay and one of my resolutions for 2008 (that will probably never be realized...) is to update this blog a lot more regularly. So with that, let's get into it...

I have talked with Wade Bates a few times here and there about how my hair was before arriving at KFIZ. Well, for awhile there I had a mohawk off and on and he's asked me quite a few times to take a gander at it. What better way to display it's glorious spikiness than in my blog? So here it is, without further ado, here are a couple of shots with me and my mohawk. What do you think? Should the 'Hawk make it's return anytime soon, or should it forever be a memory in the archives of my younger years? If my mother had the only vote, she would burn all evidence of its existence...
